Body condition scoring (BCS) uses visual and palpable key areas to assess the amount of fat cover on your horse's body, and can be a good indicator of overall health.
Body condition scoring uses a ranking of 1(severely emaciated)- 9(obese). Use body condition scoring to track changes in your horse's weight and condition over time, and to determine if a change to feeding or exercise is needed.
General categorization of body condition scores:
BCS 1-3 = Underweight
BCS 4-6 = Ideal (A horse's ideal score can vary depending on breeding status, discipline, performance level, age and other variables. A BCS of 5 is considered healthy for most situations).
BCS 7-9 = Overweight
